H13 : The A.v.D – The Defiled

If you haven’t heard of The Defiled this Halloween then I can assure you that you will have heard of them by Halloween next year as the debut album that they are currently working on will, I have no doubt, slay. Their ‘1888’ EP, based around the exploits of Jack The Ripper, pretty much blew me away and, with a skull crushing sound and awesome look, the band seem destined for severe notoriety.
One look at the video for ‘The Resurrectionists’ (which you can find below) will tell you why I contacted the band when I was setting up the 13 Days Of Halloween series of interviews. Frontman Stitch D suggested that keyboardist/programmer The A.v.D might be best suited to answer the questions………….
What are your most vivid childhood memories of Halloween?
Sticking my hands in spaghetti in my school’s locker room that had been made into some kind of makeshift scary walk around/ride thing, and some kid saying in the most un-scary, scary voice “It’s guts, It’s guuuuts!!!” – crappest ride ever!
Why do you think that the worlds of horror and metal/punk have always been so closely linked?
We are the horror movies of the audio world. People that would be inclined to watch horror movies will be attracted to music that just might make you want to kill someone!
What are your thoughts on the state of horror movies at the present time? With all the remakes and rehashes there doesn’t seem to be much original thought going on at present…..
I dunno about that, there have been some good movies out, and graphics have gone fucking insane! If the story can back that up, you got a winner!! I look at new horror movies like digital art, I’m always thinking things like, “that would be amazing as an album cover” or “we should make a t-shirt like that!” haha
Has there been a horror remake yet that has bettered the original movie?

John Carpenter’s Halloween or Rob Zombie’s Halloween?
Rob Zombie’s. I just like the angle he took on it with all the pre-history. It was cool to have a peak in to Michael’s past. I like the sequel too, people talked shit about it but, if you want to see a load of people dying in various horrific ways, that’s one good movie!
Fast zombies or slow zombies?
Slow ones are classic, fast ones have impact. Chasing me? Definitely slow ones!
What’s the greatest ever horror movie kill?
Hellraiser : “Jesus Wept” when the dude gets ripped to shreds – It makes me smile coz JC (drummer) always uses that line. Or Silent Hill where the pyramid head guy rips that girl’s skin right off and throws it to the door – Brutal!
Who is the baddest ever horror movie villain…and why?
Is that bad meaning bad or bad meaning good? I’m going for good here – IT. Because he’s a clown and should know better!
Who is the greatest ever Scream Queen?
The woman that recorded the Wilhelm Scream samples. They have been used in hundreds of horror movies. We use one of them in our live show as well.
Name your Top 5 favourite horror movies of all time…and tell us why!!
In no particular order, off the top of my head and it might be different tomorrow;
Hostel : It’s got a fucking insane premise, and it’s just so brutal!
The Prophecy : I remember watching that over and over again when it came out, I have to watch that again actually, I can hardly remember it.
Lost Highway : Just plain nuts, that’s a movie I have watched way too many times. I don’t know if it would be classified as horror though…?
The Others : Because The Sixth Sense sucks!
28 Days Later : I just remember thinking “that’s good!” when it came out! The sequel was quite good if I remember correctly!?
I watch a lot of movies they all start to blend.
What underrated horror movie would you recommend to our readers just in case they have never seen it?
The Fourth Kind. Definitely impressed by that one.
What ‘star’ of the music world would you like to see slaughtered in gory horror movie style? How and why?
Paris Hilton. She released a single of some sort at one point, didn’t she? Let’s have her impaled on a spear, then she slides down it. What? They’ve done it!? (House Of Wax) Fuck yeah!!!!
What are your plans for Halloween this year?
