It’s not the fear that tears you apart…it’s him! Yes, him! That Joseph Parry bloke from UK metallers Karhu! The fourth victim of Uber Rock’s 13 Days Of Halloween is a young savage whose band, and their debut album, caused many a ripple in the waters at both URHQ and Camp Crystal Lake. Roll your bloodshot eyes down the page and discover how in space no one Karhu you scream…..
1.) What are your most vivid childhood memories of Halloween?
Hahahaha, being told that I couldn’t go out and do it, my mum would always do up the house (by do up the house I mean JUST the front windows) with a pumpkin… then after children kept coming to the house my mum moved the idea to “let’s go to Pizza Hut/the cinema so we don’t have to deal with these fucking children knocking on our door.”
2.) Why do you think that the worlds of horror and metal/punk have always been so closely linked?
I think it’s because that stuff deals with the aspects of life that are darker, more sinister and strangely more real. Sounds a little funny saying “more real” and involving horror… but when you look deeper into the elements that piece together metal and horror movies etc, they all seem to combine lyrical content/themes based around humanity. Someone goes insane, is shy/bullied, people get stalked/hunted. When you look at those concepts…
Film: Someone goes insane they have deeper reasons behind that (usually linked to the devil or demons through to child abuse etc) it still ties incredibly real (child abuse etc) aspects of life it just twists it to make it more exciting.
Music: Even when metal is talking about dragons and and beasts being hunted down or witches being slayed (really unreal shit) you can easily (I think hahaha) link it back to real stuff. Hunting witches/slaying dragons… those concepts work off of the aspects of the needs to be some sort of justice. A witch is evil (supposedly) and she turns people into toads and eats children etc so burn her/drown her: ie, kill her for justice. Slay a dragon to free a princess? Why? To show how much you care, how fearless mankind can be, how powerful we are etc.
But then this shit can easily be covered by metal on the flip side too… look at Tesseract’s Concealing Fate… Perfection etc “a picture perfect moment, in the life of the one who is something better, more than anything I will ever be.” Which focusses more on the aspects of human emotion and weakness. Desire. And I guess that that’s the key word for today. “Desire”. There’s a desire to kill, to steal, to eat, to fuck, to get justice, to feel equal… it’s always a desire.
3.) Has there been a horror remake yet that has bettered the original movie?
HAHAHA no. But if I were to ellaborate I would say that the ’90s Night Of The Living Dead and the 00s Dawn Of The Dead remakes were awesome!
4.) What’s the greatest ever horror movie kill?
Zombieland’s zombie kill of the week! Hahaha, when that sister/nun rings the bell and drops a piano on a zombie running after her – hahaha just perfect!
5.) Who is the baddest ever horror movie villain…and why?
Jason… Bastard just doesn’t stop coming hahaha. That coupled with a Machete? Christ sake…
6.) Who is the greatest ever Scream Queen?
Patricia Tallman in Night Of The Living Dead… one of the only women on film to scream and make me believe she was scared and not just posing.
7.) Name your Top 5 favourite horror movies of all time…and tell us why!!
Night Of The Living Dead
Dawn Of The Dead
Insidious
Zombieland
Rec
All for the same reason… They created more than just cheap scares, they either made me care about the characters or they gave me something more from an aesthetic/creative point of view.
8.) What underrated horror movie would you recommend to our readers just in case they have never seen it?
Underrated? The ’90s remake of Night Of The Living Dead… never understood why people hated it – the acting was fucking incredible.
9.) What is your guilty pleasure, the trashy horror flick that you hold dear but everyone else runs away from?
Christ I dunno… I like to think I have pretty good taste in horror films, hahaha!
10.) What is the greatest ever horror movie poster?
Ahhh I honestly don’t know! My knowledge for posters is non-existent!
11.) Have you ever had a ghostly supernatural experience?
Argh yeah… I remember when I was REALLY young I was trying to fall asleep and I kept nodding off and shit. I woke up and saw my door creek open and I swear on my life I saw (or at least believe I saw) a man stood there in a Victorian suit/hat etc… I had to sleep with a light on up until I was about 12 because of that.
12.) What ‘star’ of the music world would you like to see slaughtered in gory horror movie style?
Matt Tuck… Self explanatory.
13.) What are your plans for Halloween this year?
Go to a party and watching films with my missus/friends!
