Artwork for ...of Deceit And Utter Madness by FuneralopolisPlease forgive me, I am relatively new to doom metal. I tend to not spend too much time with doom because I usually lean towards higher energy genres and with the few doom bands I have looked at so far I found a little too sombre for me. In all honesty, I probably have not given it the chance it deserves. I think that ‘…of Deceit and Utter Madness’ might have just changed all that for me though. This has made me question the expectations I had for doom metal and quite honestly has made me reconsider my position on the genre.

While the tone is in line with what you would expect with doom metal there is a lot more death metal like energy than I am used to. This really made the album stand out to me and somewhat makes it a middle ground that made the album much more approachable for me. Even the whole genre. After this, I’m sure I will be checking out a lot more in the same vein and this album is the catalyst for that. Whenever an album is good enough to broaden your horizons, then there has to be something special about it.

The vocals are dark and angry, and wonderful. Perfectly complemented by the dark aggressive drums are guitar there is very little not to like. The whole album has a great flow from track to track that feels very intentional. I love how track one is a short clip of the sound of a roller coaster and track seven is spoken word with an aggressive echo and sounding like it was recorded on very old equipment these do a great job to set a tone subcutaneously that is carried through the album and to break up the album like a pallet cleanser between courses.

While I would not say this is the best album I have ever heard as it is a genre I am still adapting to I very much enjoyed this album and I think it might have changed my mind about the genre. This is a great stepping stone into the doom genre, I think, and because of that, I think you owe it to yourself to give this one a chance. It is excellent and I have a feeling you will think so too.
