Artwork for You Are Filth by Death BloomsThe latest shining hope of British metalcore, Death Blooms already made some waves with the release of their self-titled debut EP back in 2017. Possessing a clear ear for massive choruses and the canny sense to sidestep the formulaic trappings of modern metalcore (read: they don’t write whole songs based around breakdowns – that can be all the difference sometimes, folks), the band set their sights on conquering the metal scene along the same routes as fellow UK metalcore acts Bury Tomorrow, While She Sleeps or Architects. Following on from that first EP, the band return with ‘You Are Filth’ – a release which lands just in time for their first ever headline run in England.

Straight away, one thing is clearly apparent; Death Blooms are talented. Very, very talented. Somehow, even amongst the increasingly saturated bounds of metalcore Death Blooms are able to both exhibit the genre’s most recognisable traits and completely ignore some of the genre’s more flaccid elements, infusing new life into the genre and producing the kind of insta-classics that could clean up on the rock/metal club circuit. Each chorus is absolutely enormous; the kind of enormous that begs to be seen on a main stage at a major festival, roared by a legion of braying fans. That much is established right away on the EP’s opening track ‘Crosses’, the rampage of the guitars nothing short of a full sensory assault.

It’s crazy to think just how hard Death Blooms are already going, their second EP not losing any of the intensity they exhibited on the first release, whilst also doubling down on their best elements. ‘You Are Filth’ doesn’t stray too far from classic metalcore territories, but then it doesn’t need to – these songs are hardwired to appeal to your bread and butter metal fan whilst delivering the kind of quality that could see any of these songs appear as fan favourites in other bands’ sets. The closest we get to straying into new territories is the decidedly Deftones like vocal melodies at the start of ‘Believe’, hinting towards other sonic avenues that the band can explore in future.

And that’s the thing – Death Blooms feel like a band with a lot of future in front of them. In eight tracks and two EPs they have already released songs that are stronger than a lot of other newcomer metal bands first few efforts, finding the sweet spot between having their own sound and championing the very best of their genre. Passionate in delivery and performance, there isn’t a dull moment on ‘You Are Filth’, the EP all the heraldry we need to indicate that Death Blooms are a band that we must absolutely keep our eyes on – it might be early to call them the future of British metal just yet, but they certainly promise an incredibly fun present.
