Dead End Drive-In: Now Showing – ‘From Inside’ (Gary Numan Special Edition)

John Bergin’s award-winning animated film, ‘From Inside’, gets the reissue treatment, with this ‘Special Edition’ focusing on the music that accompanies the 71 minute opus.

 

But first, let’s talk about the film itself…

 

 

John Bergin adapted his own graphic novel, ‘From Inside’, into this cult hit in waiting animated feature in 2008 and it went on to be screened at over thirty-five film festivals worldwide, nabbing a few awards along the way: Best Animated Film award at the prestigious SITGES International Film Festival; Best Feature at Utopiales; and First Feature Winner at Fantasia.

 

It’s hardly surprising too as the film expertly combines panels from Bergin’s original graphic novel with props, 3D models and practical effects, the aim of keeping its “bookness” intact achieved with some aplomb.

 

The plot revolves around Cee, a young pregnant woman on a damaged train traversing across a post-apocalyptic wasteland, who, along with her fellow travellers, is desperate to overcome the ravages of war, famine, and a mysterious plague.

 

The repetition of the images of the train gives the whole film a wholly industrial feel… and that’s where we get to the music.

 

With his first foray into the world of film scores since 1995’s ‘Human’ (which collected music written for the 1991 low budget horror flick, The Unborn), Gary Numan – alongside regular production collaborator, Ade Fenton – has fashioned a body of work here that echoes the industrial stylings of his recent output, yet offers plenty of restraint amid sombre overtones.

 

‘From Inside’ will be of interest to both cult film and comic-book fans, but as this is the ‘Gary Numan Special Edition’ I ask the question, can any Numanoid truly look to the future without this completing their collection?
