Hailing this their fourth album as their heaviest album yet, Breed 77 kick off the album with lead single ‘Wake Up’ – a clock ticks and then my ear drums are split at the seams as Breed 77 come hurtling from the speakers. With an incredibly heavy sound and unusual mix of English and Spanish lyrics – half sung, half shouted – ‘Wake Up’ is the band’s perfect call to action..
With the mix of bilingual vocals and heavy as fuck riffs ‘The Battle Of Hatin’ grabs you in a headlock and starts to beat you into submission. There is definitely a nod towards the old school metal riffery but also the variety of the nu school as the riffs twist and turn in and out of the vocal melodies in ‘Revolution On My Mind’ – “Start the Revolution right now!” barks Paul Isola and who am I to disagree?
Fans of the heavier side of Metal will love riffs like ‘Insects’ and its twisted melodic moments that add to the complex music on offer here. ‘New Disease’ has a hypnotic intro before it meanders towards a nylon stringed guitar solo only for the electric guitar to slash in and again pierce my ear drums. ‘In The Temple Of Ram’, with its pipes and brooding intro, meanders through almost six minutes of instrumental.
The album closes with some smart flamenco frettary (is there such a term? Well there certainly is now) before ‘Zombie’ – yeah, you know the song by Irish dreamers The Cranberries is given the Breed 77 treatment, being spat out heavy as a tonne of housebricks or a very very heavy thing. Maybe the original should have sounded like this?
Me, I’m off to reapply my eyeliner and ruffle me barnet before any of my sleazy rockin’ mates catches this on my stereo!
