FESTIVAL NEWS: BLOODSTOCK CANCELLED; EXTRA DAY ADDED FOR 2021

This year’s Bloodstock festival has been cancelled, in the wake of the continuing uncertainty around the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. This morning’s announcement was not unexpected, but it certainly is a massive disappointment for many, many metal fans, especially as this year marks Bloodstock’s 20th anniversary. However, the disappointment may well be tempered by the additional announcement Bloodstock 2021 will be the biggest yet, with the festival taking place over five days.

Shrapnel – ‘Palace For The Insane’ (Candlelight Records)

For the past decade or so, Shrapnel have been one of the bands at the vanguard of the new wave of British thrash metal. While they may not have earned the international recognition or acclaim enjoyed by some of their contemporaries, they have continued to fly the flag for the genre in this particular corner of the Überverse, guaranteeing one thing along the way: anytime you put a Shrapnel album on your deathdeck, or go to see them live, your neck muscles will end up resembling the band’s name… ‘Palace For The Insane’ marks something of a new beginning of the East Anglian lads, as it is the first album since they stripped down to a four-piece, with the newly recruited Aarran Tucker taking over both the bass and vocal duties…

Firewind – ‘Firewind’ (AFM)

It’s somewhat striking that Firewind aren’t more famous than they are, given that main-man Gus G is one of the most renowned guitarists in metal. He’s worked with Dream Evil, Mystic Prophecy, Nightrage and some fella from Birmingham with a penchant for bats, but the workaholic Greek lad keeps returning to the band he formed as a teenager. This self-titled effort is their ninth full length but while it has them firing on all cylinders, it also provides some clues as to why Firewind aren’t quite reaching the heights some of their contemporaries have.

VIDEO OF THE WEEK – ABORTED TORTOISE

Despite the current lockdown, we are still receiving a healthy bundle of submissions for our coveted ‘Video Of The Week’ title. While some artists are trying to find new ways of visually interpreting their songs, others obviously have had the guts of their filming completed in advance of the global quarantine, with the finishing touches being added in isolated post-production. This week’s selection once again sees a balance of these two approaches….
