Quite often John B finds that the thing he looks for the most in any new album or band is that they do something different or unique. This remastered album from Swedish melancholics Vanhelga is definitely something he has never heard before. While he is sure this would be called black metal, he feels like that is far too simple of a category for this. Squeeze/Heaven 17 – Liverpool, Philharmonic Hall – 2 November 2019

Squeeze’s ‘Greatest Hits’ was the first CD our resident gigaholic’s dad bought himself, when he got his first cd player, while the then not-so big lad picked a triple Madness CD box set, with rarities on – yeah, he’s always been that person. He remembers hisdad putting the Squeeze CD on and really liking it, at the point where he was starting to develop his own music taste at the start of the’ 90s. He’s even seen Glenn Tilbrook solo before, supporting someone on a show where he worked the sound desk, but never Squeeze as a full band, so taking it in in a venue designed for clarity of sound like the Philharmonic Hall should be quite the experience. The Cutthroat Brothers – ‘Taste For Evil’ (Hound Gawd! Records)

Monk is not a big fan of musicals – they’re twee, they’re unappetizing and, by and large, they don’t contain very much that is rock ‘n’ roll. There are a couple of exceptions, of course, one of the most obvious perhaps being the totally in(s)ane ‘Sweeney Todd’. Being married to a barber probably helps to bring it a bit closer to home for the boss man however, especially when that blade sweeps across his throat and he realizes how much nearer that life insurance policy is getting to being cashed in… which brings him neatly to the subject of this review…
