Karin Park – ‘Private Collection’ (Pelagic Records)

Karin Park, who should be already known to regular UR readers as one half of Norwegian noise rock duo Årabrot, has been referred to as the Scandinavian Nico for her persona, and dark ambient legend Lustmord called her a “force of nature”. However, despite a Eurovision song contest entry, a year of sold out shows as the lead in Les Miserables in Oslo and performances alongside Lana Del Rey and David Bowie, Karin’s solo talents have still remained somewhat under-exposed for the really broad public. This might change now, with a stunning new album and an extensive European tour with A.A. Williams this Autumn.

Abrasive Wheels – ‘Abrasive Wheels (1981-1984)’ (Cherry Red)

1982 was a pivotal year for the second wave of UK punk. In fact these days ‘UK82’ (named after the Exploited song of the same name) has become a genre of its own. Whilst the likes of The Exploited, GBH and Discharge are the bands that immediately spring to mind when you look back on that era (each one released a stone cold classic album in 1982), there were plenty of other punk bands around at the same time releasing quality stuff. Leeds’ Abrasive Wheels were certainly one of them, releasing their highly charged debut ‘When The Punks Go Marching In’ in the same year. ‘Abrasive Wheels (1981-1984)’ is a new double CD from Cherry Red, collecting together the band’s whole recorded output between the years of 1981 and 1984.

Parkway Drive – ‘Darker Still’ (Epitaph Records)

David O’Neill has to admit that Parkway Drive are one of the bands more akin to the genre of music that his son listens to. However, he got the opportunity to see them in Cardiff the last time they toured and whilst still not a genre of music that would be his “go to” listening, he has begun to listen to it more frequently than I otherwise would.  This may have come about after the times he has seen others such as Bullet for My Valentine and The Raven Age, so Dave thought he’d give this forthcoming newbie a listen…
