Deep Purple/Blue Öyster Cult – Manchester, AO Arena – 26 October 2022

A return to Manchester Arena for DJ Astrocreep for another big one, as Deep Purple and Blue Öyster Cult roll into town. A night of blues, guitar and keys wankery, and some good old-fashioned fun lay in wait as the big man circumnavigates a busy train and then tram to reach his seat just before the cowbell kings take to the stage. The walk around the arena seems a lot longer than it used to these days, but that just adds to the anticipation of what’s to come.

The first thing to be noticed about tonight’s crowd as it files gradually yet inexorably into this historic venue and begins to fill every available millimetre of floor space is its eclectic nature. There are old school metallers (such as Monk and DQ) who virtually lived within these hallowed walls back in the heady days of the Eighties rubbing shoulders with black leather clad new age goths and first (and now second) generation emo kids. Monster Truck/Those Damn Crows – Cardiff, Students Union Main Hall – 15 October 2022

Looking back a bit, David O’Neill realized that he had seen both these bands a few times, at Steelhouse, Download, among others. So, it was going to be a night of singing along to familiar tracks.  One of our Valleys correspondent’s claims to fame is being the sound engineer for the Crows the same year of their first Download triple bill when they played a local rugby club on the back of a flatbed lorry – oh, highs and lows of rock n roll rise to fame.

Having seen both Parkway Drive and While She Sleeps at festival dates over the past few years, Jonny B was pretty keen to see what impact their live show would have in a closed arena.
