Uber Rock’s 13 Days of Halloween take their last breath today…and in the company of a bona fide scream queen. Hella, keyboardist and living doll, is counting down the seconds until Lordi’s new album, ‘Scare Force One’, crash lands into stores and stereo systems…but not before the Scarbie doll let’s us into her burned plastic head to hear her thoughts on Halloween and horror…..

“This is Hella from Lordi; a pleasure to speak to you, Uber Rock!”

1.) What are your most vivid childhood memories of Halloween?

In Finland – believe it or not – we don’t actually celebrate Halloween. Just recently, shops have started to sell people Halloween decorations and stuff and kids might dress up as well, but when I was a nasty little scarbie kid, I knew about Halloween only from what I had seen on TV.

2.) Why do you think that the worlds of horror and metal/punk have always been so closely linked?

Maybe because both types of expression; metal music and horror, have that in-built ability to shock people. Bringing horror elements to metal lyrics and looks definitely makes it more powerful. Also, using demonic sounds like the ‘triton’ or the ‘Devils Note’, have been so common in metal music for years and create such an evil sound.

3.) Has there been a horror remake yet that has bettered the original movie?

I can’t really say if any particular re-make is better since it’s usually made with a different director, different actors, and different technology, etc. I just consider most of them to be just individual pieces; like, for example The Evil Dead; the re-make was really good but nothing could replace the uniqueness of the original.

4.) What’s the greatest ever horror movie kill?

It’s really, really hard to choose the greatest, but I love the really vicious stuff; all the absolutely nasty stuff where you can see the face being destroyed; the way the look on the victim’s face is portrayed; that is really terrifying. One pretty cool way to die was in the movie called Cube. In the opening scene, a guy gets hit by a sharp metal net and his body falls into cube shaped pieces.

5.) Who is the baddest ever horror movie villain…and why?

The ‘baddest’ are always the ones you have no idea about; the one who is the bad guy (or girl), but never looks like it at the start. It’s creepy, because anyone in the room you are in could be a killer. For example, take the original version of Friday The 13th, where the villain is revealed to be Jason’s mother.

6.) Who is the greatest ever Scream Queen?

God, I hate girls screaming. I’m not crowning anyone as Queen for that.

7.) Name your favourite horror movies of all time…and tell us why!!

This is difficult… but here’s some that deserve mention. Not in any order:

The Evil Dead – All of them. I love the spirit of those indie film makers.

The Exorcist – It was one of the first horror movies I saw. I was age 7 or something and it scared the shit out of me. Actually, Hella’s new mask on our new photos for new album, ‘Scare Force One’, has a little bit of the Regan look.

The Ring – The original Japanese version and the American re-make. There are elements in that, that as a child I found really crazy and creepy; like disturbed TV pictures, weird characters in the background of photos and film, mistakes in video recordings, etc.

8.) What underrated horror movie would you recommend to our readers just in case they have never seen it?

If you want to know how it would be (in reality), if there was a zombie apocalypse, then I recommend watching the movie Battery. Then, there’s that movie called Cube, that I actually mentioned already. It’s a sci-fi / thriller / horror, made in Canada.

9.) What is your guilty pleasure, the trashy horror flick that you hold dear but everyone else runs away from?

Dolly Dearest, a horror movie from the year 1992. I saw it as 10 year old kid and absolutely loved it; still do. It was played in theatres in one state of the USA and I got a dusty VHS copy. I haven’t met many people who even know it or like it.

10.) What is the greatest ever horror movie poster?

Uhm…. Visually, I really like very simple ones with only a very low amount of colour. Pray For Rosemary’s Baby and The Omen for example, both have very clever posters, picturing simply the idea of the movie.

11.) Have you ever had a ghostly, supernatural experience?

Hmm…? I don’t think I have that strong “sixth sense”. However, I have seen and felt the presence of someone I knew – when for example visiting their house or touching their stuff – after they have passed away.

12.) What ‘star’ of the music world would you like to see slaughtered in gory horror movie style?

Jeremy 13th from Snow White’s Poison Bite (eat my shoes, dude!)

We’re playing a release party for our new record, ‘Scare Force One’, in Helsinki, the next night, so let’s see!
