The Cadillac Three/Stephen Wilson Jr/ Willy Cobb – Cardiff, Tramsheds – 16 May 2024
They say the years go faster the older you get, and this could well be true, as it seems like nothing more than a hot minute since I first came across comparative musical pubescents (well, they’re celebrating 13 years together as a band in 2024) The Cadillac Three, and I was delighted to reacquaint myself with these three fine southern chappies as they pulled into Cardiff for the penultimate night of their latest whistlestop of this ‘ere li’l ol’ Uber Kingdom…

It could be argued that, despite what had gone down the previous evening in a field just a mile or so south of tonight’s venue, this was the most important gig of the year to date on the Belfast music scene. Yes, “The Boss” may have enjoyed one of his farewell flings just 24 hours previously, but tonight was about six of this city’s finest proponents of the art vying for the honour of, well, playing a field, albeit in the heart of south Derbyshire, as the first contestants to draw blood (sic) in the final rounds of this year’s Metal 2 The Masses took to the stage for a fiercely fought competition in which there could be only one winner but ultimately no losers…

A long-waited return to a venue he once did some work at was in store for DJ Astrocreep’s first ever time seeing From The Jam. Throw in a 45th anniversary tour for seminal ‘All Mod Cons’ album – and Scottish punk legends Skids – and it made for what would hopefully be an enthralling evening of top-class musicianship and songwriting. The big lad arrived shortly after doors, taking his (sadly these days) much needed seat and settle in for some good old-fashioned fun….

It’s no secret to anyone that knows him that Jase W is a huge fan of PVRIS. After a random chance at reviewing a show of theirs a few years ago he’s been a real diehard fan: ‘Evergreen’ was one of his top albums last year, so he obviously wouldn’t pass off a chance to catch them again, especially not with Scene Queen in support.

One thing that’s stood out to Jase W a bit when it comes to gigs over in Netherlands is that it’s not uncommon for shows to have just the headline artist on their own. And today on a sweltering hot start to May, he’s back at Melkweg to catch Cassyette because evidently he’s rejected a chilled warm evening outside in favour of live music: weird that.

Having spent the previous evening fulfilling the final of his commitments to the annual showcase of somewhat heavier local talent that is the Bloodstock Metal 2 The Masses competition, it was time for Monk to step outside of his comfort zone and take up a long-standing invitation to experience a totally different aspect of his home city’s musical sound, in the shape of an evening of shoegazing at a venue which has quickly established its reputation as one of the finest and most professionally run in town. “You’ll be bored stupid,” predicted Her Majesty The Dark Queen earlier in the day… well, there was only one way to find out if she would be right, wasn’t there?

An evening of local entertainment for not just local people awaits, as Attic Theory finally get around to releasing their new album, ‘What We Fear The Most’. The Scouse groove rockers are formed from several older Liverpool bands, so full of experienced musicians, as well as having their own side project covering Stone Temple Pilots tracks, meaning it should be an absolute treat to hear live. Despite slightly bemoaning the 6.30pm first band, DJ Astrocreep headed down to check out all the acts.

With grassroots venues closing at a rate of knots and local promoters pulling out of the local music scene, it makes a great change to find one of each who are bucking the trend and we at Über Rock try to support both of these when we can, all across the Überverse. After all, without these the future of live music is likely to mean just giant heritage bands playing giant stadia and charging highly inflated prices for the pleasure of their presence. Eventually these will stop touring and the underground music scene will be just that. Anyhow, tonight brought together two of the local promotors and venues that David O regularly makes the effort to support…

There’s nothing like seeing a name like Lordi pop up doing a tour and you decide to stick a few nostalgic videos on YouTube and see “uploaded 17 years ago”to make you feel like you might as well go collect your pension, is there? Yeah, well, anyway Jase W was gonna throw the horns around a bunch this night because the lineup is more metal than your mum’s kettle. Lordi and his gruesome ensemble were tearing up P60 in Amstelveen supported by All For Metal, who our man saw at this same venue last year supporting Wind Rose. So i t promised to be a fun, wacky and above all, metal as fuck and a jolly good time to be had by all…

An eclectic dual-headline set in the Peer Hat basement on a night Monday saw solid opening sets from heavy-metal collective The Kingdom Below and prog-rock quartet Blood Of Achilles, followed by the energy and originality of Manchester-based rock group Ingénue and heavy psychedelia from Japanese two-piece Psydoll. A night of many directions, many musical influences, and myriad performances, the Peer Hat basement bounced accordingly along to these various powerful musical energies. Our Georgia reports on what went down…

If there’s many things Jase W could say about what happens on a weekend out in the Netherlands, being sunburnt in April probably isn’t one of them… but it happened anyway! So he dragged his rather pink looking self to a darkened room on a Sunday evening to get screamed at for a bit, as you do.

Another visit to Manchester for the big lad by the name of DJ Astrocreep, this time to take in the traditional folk and black metal stylings of Myrkur, the stage name of Danish talent Amalie Braun. with a single, previously unknown support, there was likely to be a lot to learn and delight in through the evening.
