The fact that Pagan Altar is one of the lesser known names from the NWoBHM era can most likely be attributed to the fact that they were one of the few, if not the only, band pursuing a darkier, doomier musical path than the majority of their spandex clad, double guitar wielding contemporaries. However, while they released only one album during their initial foray into the limelight, their combination of heavy doom, psychedelic prog and English folk music left a lasting legacy on the scene, arguably influencing the direction of successors such as Paradise Lost, Skyclad and Winterfylleth.

DYMYTRY PARADOX – HAARLEM, PATRONAAT – 23 JANUARY 2026

Kicking off a string of weekend shows during a particularly nasty cold snap in January, Jase W headed over to his usual Haarlem haunt of Patronaat. Tonight’s show was headlined by a band new to his ears, which is Dmytry Paradox, as he had been drawn in particularly by the support act, Space Of Variations whom he’s been a long time fan of since years ago after they grabbed his attention at Rebellion in Manchester. Oddly enough Space Of Variations also supported their Ukrainian compatriots Jinjer a while back and he would be seeing them the next night also, so big up the Ukrainian scene!
