Like quite a few of their counterparts on the Northern Ireland metal scene – one which, despite the continued ignorance of the local mainstream media, is perhaps even more vibrant and vital than at any time in its history – these death groovers have undergone something of a traumatic period in their existence, with the usual story of line-up changes threatening to stymie their initial momentum. But, there is one thing which is consistent in this particular corner of the Überverse, and that is the ability of those concerned to emerge from periods of challenge stronger and more defiant than ever, and that is exactly what Nihilanth have done with this declarative second EP.
Drawing deeper on the darker, more extreme deathcore influences obliquely hinted at on their debut, (nominal title track) ‘Ruin’ blasts out of the speakers more effectively than having a tonne of semtex with a short fuse stuck in yer eardrums, its devastation made all the more explosive by the guest collab of Patrick Scanlon from BFHC crue If It Bleeds, who just helps raise it to that next footstep of intensity.
‘The Emergent Truth’ is perhaps the closest the beys remain to pure DM, with its pummelling blastbeats and winding rhythm accentuated by Aidan Thompson’s visceral vocals, while ‘Fangs’ sees them integrating nu-metal electrocore vibes, especially in the breakdowns, into their eclectic sonic mix, while still retaining that all-important acidity.
‘Fractured’ brings more nu-metalcore vibes to the table, yet retains the true essence of DM, especially in the guitar harmonies and continuously impressive percussive impact, while closer ‘Don’t Pray For Me’ can be summed up in two short words: FUCKING IMMENSE. It is absolutely HUGE in every department, from the violently visceral vocals through the stunningly implemented atmospherics, the beautifully intertwined harmonies to the precisely understated percussion. A majestic way to close out a highly impressive and memorable set.
