Chosen by Monk

The seasoned power popster takes us into the ebullient world of this fictional heroine on this latest extract from his most recent album, last year’s ‘The Simpleton’:

Speaking about the song, the singer/songwriter/produced, known over the years for his work with projects such as The Grip, Honeycrack, Jackdaw4 and The Dowling Poole, told me:

‘Sadie Goldman’ started out as an idle speculation: a song that roughly imagined where the lives of ghosts from my past might have taken them, but it quickly turned into more of an observational commentary on the nature of relationships in the modern era, told through the fictional character of Sadie Goldman.

Initially, it has the same sadness found in the song ‘Labelled With Love’ by Squeeze, but I hope it has a rather happier resolution in that Sadie decides to challenge the tragedy of a life that took her nowhere, and refuses to accept the seeming inevitability of her fate, so she steps out of the mundane confines of the life she lives to see what else the world might have to offer.

And he offered an unusual insight into the accompanying video:

A peculiar phenomenon of the modern age is that I’ve never met video maker, Sam Riddlestone, but this is the third animated video he has made for me. In fact I’ve never even spoken to Sam, it’s only ever been a working relationship via email. But I loved the showreel he first sent me and his video ideas have been spot on the mark every time, so I’m hoping we’ll continue working together in the future.
