The term “progressive” is possibly one of the most abused in metal terminology, as very often those who employ it are not actually doing much to progress the genre, but rather recycling what has gone before and riding on the coat-tails of genuine progenitors and innovators: but, then, they do say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery… But, now and again an act comes along that genuinely takes a step forward and pushes the generic boundaries, if not to their logical (if not illogical) limits, but as far as they feel comfortable in doing so. Acts like Infected Rain.
Proving that time doesn’t stand still for anyone, Lena Scissorhands and company take us on a journey that has brought them to this, the most defining moment of their career to date, an album of aural shifts, combining traditional miens with unexpected and revelatory twists and turns, blending atmospherics with brutalism in a beautifully, cogently realized collection of hard-hitting, emotionally draining songs that ingrain themselves into the very core of your being.
‘Time’ is one of those albums that works on every level, appealing to both our most primal instincts but also the deepest, most innermost, most contemplative elements of our humanity. Massive moments of EDM-driven contrast with sweeping orchestral allegories, hair-raising screams overtop haunting, ominous atmospheres, uncontrollable energy counterpoints emotional pain, searing breakdowns mix and meld with transitory moments of self-reflection, all taking us on a journey of mutual self-discovery, beckoning us to understand that we limit ourselves by our fears and how we must harness the pain to overcome them.
‘Time’ is a moment in same. A stopover in the transitional madness that is the journey through life, taking us from where we have been to where we are now and possibly to where we have yet to explore. Time indeed does not stand still, and on the evidence of this powerful, hugely emotional and evocative album, neither are Infected Rain as they take us on that journey of mutual discovery.
