I must admit that I know very little, if practically anything, about the subjects of this review, apart from the fact that they are a trio from the French city of Nantes who describe their sound as “heavy psychedelic rock”. Well, that description alone would explain why they are signed to one of our favourite labels – and one which very rarely fails to please in the enjoyment stakes, never delivering a donkey to a pedigree showcase. In fact, in our experience, every single one of HPS’ entries into the canon of quality metal releases has been a sure-fire winner: if I was a bookie offering odds against them, I’d be a very poor man indeed!
Decasia are yet another example of the team at HPS’ unerring ability to uncover and unearth high quality new talent in the doom, stoner and psych miens, as this is a highly impressive feast for the aural cortexes, and one which offers a sumptuous ten courses of delicious and gloriously satisfying engorgement which leaves one full, but also desiring to come back for more.
Big meaty riffs fill your aural palate, washed down with swathes of beautiful bass-invoked atmospherics, which drive your need to imbibe more and more. The percussion swirls like a classic Merlot, seducing its way into your inner core and giving you that all important sense of anticipation for the rest of the tastes coming your way. As you close your eyes and savour the enjoyment, a beautiful colourscape dances behind your closed eyelids, transporting you to a carefree word where only the glow of the music washing around and over you matters.
‘An Endless Feast For Hyenas’ is a beautifully crafted album, in places hypnotic, in others challenging, but always pleasing. If you’re looking for looking for sonic references, they fly somewhere betwixt and between space rock giants such as Hawkwind, classic prog, the heaviness of early Purple and the latter-day revivalist sensibilities of the likes of Kyuss. Yes, it’s a weird mix of ingredients, but it is a recipe that works on every level… OK, that’s enough of the cookery references: I’m off to grab a KFC while you enjoy this aural feast…
