Book Review: ‘The Strange Case Of Dr Terry And Mr Chimes’ – Terry Chimes (Wilkinson Publishing)

the strange case book cover 2dAn autobiography with a difference, you say? A drummer who played with some of the world’s biggest and best bands leaves it all behind to become a highly successful chiropractor, then gets back behind the drum stool, and everything in between? Oh the joy, right? Right!

In less than 200 pages Terry Chimes will make you laugh out loud and make you think with this autobiography. Sure, as music fans we are drawn to the bits about how he got in The Clash and how it went wrong and all the road stories he divulges – and it’s all in here – but Terry writes with far more intelligence than your average rock autobiography: it’s not about birds, booze, rehab or finding God.

It’s great to read first hand about The Clash because it hasn’t come from Terry’s perspective before, it has always been from the others or an “insider” or someone “close to the band”. The Clash stuff was a great read, as was the Hanoi Rocks stuff, but I must admit the after music pieces about setting up his incredibly successful business is also engaging and inspiring, if I’m honest. It’s great to read a story that’s not a down on the luck rehab after rehab type scenario. It’s also warming to read how Terry viewed his early years in the East End with his family and how he looked up to his dad.

All in all Terry Chimes is a winner. His life story is certainly one that reads well and I’m glad it’s been told. I love a lot of the music he’s been involved with, right up to what he’s currently doing with The Crunch, and his hiatus from music and resulting venture into the entrepreneurial world is inspiring.

Congratulations to Mr Chimes and long may he prosper at whatever it is he chooses to do: not that he needs me to say it because with his positive ways I guess he’s a born winner and he can now add writer to his lengthy list of achievements.
