Later this month Swedish street metallers Hardcore Superstar will unleash ‘HCSS’- their tenth studio record – on the world, so we thought it was the ideal time to catch up with the band to basically find out why this is the record we should all go out and buy. We asked hardcore (superstar) fan Ross Welford to pen some questions for guitarist Vic Zino to answer, and the resulting replies…well you can read them for yourself, right here.
I’ve been a long-time fan of HCSS and I remember seeing you way back in 2000 at the Lost Weekend festival at London Docklands Arena (I still have one of the HCSS stickers that you threw out into the crowd) but did you realistically think that 15 years later you’d still be here as a bnd seemingly thriving and bigger than ever?
It’s really hard for me to answer that question because I’ve only been with the band for the last 7 years, but when you believe in it then you don’t really think about how long you’re going to last
In April you release your tenth studio record in the shape of ‘HCSS’, is it true that you took a step back to your roots on this album due to a fan giving Martin a demo of the band from back in ’94?
Those songs have always been around and we have been talking about trying to do something with them. I don’t really know about Martin getting the demo from a fan, but that would be a cool story.
So what did you hear from back then that made you think that you should perhaps go back to your early days as the inspiration for this record?
Basically damn good songs that we wanted people to hear.
For ‘HCSS’ you’ve self produced the record but worked with Joe Barresi in a mixing capacity. How did this work for you guys?
It worked out as well as we hoped it would. It was a pleasure to see Joe work with our songs bringing them to life. He really was like a fifth member of the band.
We’ve all heard ‘Don’t Mean Shit’ as a lead track off ‘HCSS’ but what other tracks should we look out for when we get to hear the full record?
I’ll just let the people have a listen and form their own opinion. But there will be a few surprises.
Moving on to life on the road you’ve recently played The Whiskey (to much lauded success). With ‘HCSS’ will you actively going to try and have a bigger presence in the US or is it just a case of a few scattered gigs?
There is nothing booked at the moment but let’s hope for a tour in the States.
For many fans, the last UK tour you did with Buckcherry was a brilliant night out with two great bands really upping their game to compete with each other – do you have any say in those you tour with or who supports you?
That was great tour, and Buckcherry were really nice guys. Of course we have a say, all bands do
So you have been on the road with Bonafide during your March UK dates. We were hoping you might have had fellow Swedes VCPS over here with you (Laughing) now that really would have been a bill to die for.
We just did a show with the guys here in Sweden. It’s always a pleasure to play with them. A tour would be nice.
What can fans expect to get at your upcoming shows?
Lots of new songs and a hell of a show, as always.
Thanks for taking the time to speak with me today, good luck with the tour and the new album. You guys really have given us some fantastic music over the years, we look forward to hearing ‘HCSS’.
Cheers!
