For an esteemed prog metal gremlin like Jase W, he is eating well so far in 2023, and tonight was three acts that straddle the line between prog metal and jazz fusion; Plini, Jakub Zytecki, and Owane & Jack Gardiner. It’s no secret that Plini and Jakub have become steadfast friends over the years and often play support to each other on many shows with just swapping out who plays first fiddle for their particular set. Not only that but Owane & Jack Gardiner released one of our resident gigaholic’s favourite albums of last year so getting to hear that stuff live was going to be a right treat…

The Oozes/Taurine – Manchester, Deaf Institute – 4 April 2023

Jase W is rarely one to ever pass up the chance at a random gig when it’s offered and tonight was one of those shows! For a Tuesday evening, it’s time for some queer feminist punk rock in the form of The Oozes and supported by Taurine who if, our resident gigaholic recalls correctly were the ones that inadvertently covered him in whipped cream at The Peer Hat a short while ago! So in this instance, Jase was staying a safe distance away in case of any further dairy related incidents (not because his legs are killing him, honest guv). It’ll be interesting to see how Taurine steps up with the bigger stage and sound system in Deaf Institute!

Drott – ‘Troll’ (By Norse Mvsic)

Drott is comprised of Arve Isdal, from Enslaved, Ivar Thormodsæter, of Ulver, and Matias Monsen. With their varied musical background ranging from metal and jazz to classical music, the group, established in 2020, released their self-titled EP in March 2021. The first full-length album, ‘Orcus’ was released in the Autumn of the same year, and they have now followed it up with this second offering to the metal gods.

Richie Ramone – ‘Live To Tell’ (LiveWire/Cargo)

When you emerge from the shadow of an iconic band, albeit some four decades afterwards, you are always going to be judged by your previous time served, with your subsequent efforts compared with what went before. It has happened to multiple acts, and it will happen to many more, just as it undoubtedly has happened with Richie Ramone, an artist who took his time to re-emerge into the critical public spotlight and now presents us with his third solo album.
