Chosen by DK Monk

For a while it looked like this week’s chosen audio-visual treat with two clear front-runners battling for the honours.

For several days, Motionless In White’s ‘Brand New Numb’, with its powerful message about bullying and self-empowerment, was toe-to-toe with Californian power crüe Niviane and their DIY battle metal epic, ‘The Berzerker’.  But then, at the last minute (quite literally), Maryland funk ‘n’ rollers Lionize came out of left field, hurdled the fences and raced around the final corner to grab the glory with this quirky clip for new single ‘Loneliest Whale’:

‘Loneliest Whale’ is the first track to be lifted from Lionize’s forthcoming new album, ‘Panic Attack!’, which is due to be released on 18 October via their own Electric Reckonimg Music, and features Clutch’s Jean-Paul Gaster on drums.

Frontman Nathan Berman says of the track:

“The song ’Loneliest Whale’ is one of my favourite songs we’ve ever written. It was inspired by an article in Science Weekly about a whale that can’t find its pod because it’s sending and receiving frequency is unlike any other whale on Earth (wikipedia.org/wiki/52-hertz_whale). As we were writing the album, we began to understand that everyone feels like this whale. Politically, socially, economically – we all feel like we aren’t being heard. Our signals are crossed and we’re looking for our own pods, our communities. The chorus simply asks, “is there anyone out there, just like me?” So many times, especially as artists, we’ve felt most at home on tour or at a rock n’ roll festival, where we’ve found our community.”
