Lavender Flu – ‘Barbarian Dust’ (In The Red Recordings)

Sometimes music can be used as a bit of escapism, it can take you to another place or sometimes just take you on a long trip down memory lane. But for those times when Jonny B feels like he wants to escape the planet entirely, there’s always space rock. Obviously Hawkwind are often the band that immediately jumps out when this particular genre is mentioned, but what you may not realise is that space rock is still well and truly alive, with lots of new, younger bands forging a similar path…

Conway – ‘Something Wicked’ (Pavement Entertainment)

Let’s face it, there are some combinations that are undebatable classics that just go hand in hand. Salt and Vinegar for example, or perhaps Korpiklaani and drinking.  But then there are other combinations that are a bit more dubious, like Jonny B once having an ex-girlfriend who thought that dipping McDonalds fries into a milkshake was the best thing… he,and we, wholeheartedly disagree! Aeons In Solitude – ‘Mourning Cloak’ (Rock Company)

It is perhaps not surprising to learn, if you look at both the name of the band and the title of this, their debut album, that Greek newcomers Aeons Of Solitude inhabit that particular subgenre of metal which they themselves happily agree is best described as “progressive doom”. However, band founder Alex Roussos (we have to wonder if he’s any relation to Demis… sorry, cheap historical prog reference) also throws the word “gothic” into the descriptive equation… Collectively, they are comparatives which more than ably some up this epic declaration of intent.

Wayward Dawn – ‘Haven Of Lies’ (Mighty Music)

John B loves it when death metal starts with a dark and ominous spoken word. It sets the stage perfectly for the type of emotion and style I love to hear in death metal. When that is followed up by wonderfully aggressive and angry tracks that really drive the emotion home, our JB is happy man. This album delivers perfectly on what he wants and likes to hear. The press information described it as old school death metal and he reckons that is a perfect description. This is defiantly old school with just enough modern flair to make it not feel dated.

Sertraline – ‘Clouded Minds & Silver Lines’ (Self-Released)

If you’ve been to almost any tech or prog related gig in the north during the last three years or so, you’ve probably come across Sertraline at one point and their slick live shows featuring face smashing riffs reminiscent of the likes of Monuments fronted by charismatic frontwoman, Lizzie who sports vocal pipes that jump between cleans and uncleans which get better with every release they put out.
