The title of this EP could be seen as quite appropriate for the format, as most EPS are released by artists “in between” their “main” album releases, often to sate the appetite of their fans for new material, or to preview a shift in direction, or even just as a fulfilment of contractual obligations. However, this is a totally different proposition from any of those said scenarios, as it represents an artist returning to her roots and presenting a somewhat different perspective on their craft.

‘No Brain, No Pain’ may be something Astrocreep said about himself on a few occasions before but it’s now being pushed into his own ears by local Liverpudlian art-rockers SPQR with their latest four-track EP. They’re a band our resident gigaholic first encountered live towards the end of last year before seeing them three times in two weeks after being hugely impressed with his first outing to catch them live. Ante-Inferno – ‘Fane’ (UKEM Records)

Ante-Inferno, the Yorkshire-based black metal four-piece, are here to deliver a heavy weight debut. The seven tracks presented hit hard with the intensity and ferocity that the genre has become known for while still incorporating a swirl of atmospheric layers and thick melodic delivery. As spring begins outside with the world still largely remaining indoors there is something to be said for a hefty dose of black metal to release some pent-up energy.

Manes – ‘Young Skeleton’ (Aftermath Music)

If you’ve not heard of Norwegian experimentalists Manes before but have even a remote interest in novel approaches to songwriting and generally odd-sounding music, then Jase W reckons you should probably give them a look in. Their latest release is a 7” vinyl release with two tracks, featuring ‘Young Skeleton’ on side A and ‘Mouth Of The Volcano’ on the B side.
