Anyone that thinks stoner metal takes itself too seriously would do well to check out ‘Absurdum Ad Nauseam,’ the latest release from Cybernetic Witch Cult. On a surface level, this Cornwall-based four-piece are just as doom-laden as the Electric Wizards of the world, but once you dig a little deeper it becomes clear that they’ve got tongues lodged firmly in cheek. And yet this is apparently their darkest album so far.

Grylle – ‘Les Grandes Compagnies’ (Antiq)

Well, this one was unexpected from top to bottom. When John B thinks black metal the last thing that comes to mind is French. English, sure Swedish, obviously, German, yes but French no. The ‘language of love’ is not something that he would expect to be brutal like this. But, then, he guesses he should not think that way. White flag jokes aside, France almost ruled the known world at one point. Just because these days the language is stereotyped as being soft and pretty does not mean that you can’t dig that historical brutality back to the surface. It is an unexpected choice that works really well but it is not the only surprise in store here.

SPQR/Lennie Dies – Liverpool, Kazimier Stockroom – 23 November 2019

Another hometown gig – the second of three successive nights – sees our normally road tripping gigaholic take in the Kazimier Stockroom for the first time to witness local heroes SQPR for the first time also. It’s the last night of a tour for SQPR and they only have a single support band in Lennie Dies, the question is quite how their hometown would treat them.
